This is to help participants (a.k.a. respondents, testers, users) using an iOS device who are trying to join a session, but can't progress because they face this issue:

  1. The participant reaches the final stage of set up/permissions before connecting with the researcher - screen sharing - and tap Start broadcast

  2. The participant receives an error message Not available when AirPlay, CarPlay, Restrictions, or screen mirroring is active

This error message is due to a limitation in iOS's screen sharing that prevents it from working in Lookback if something else on the device is screen sharing, e.g. using Airplay, CarPlay, etc.

If those do not apply, screen mirroring, then this error message is likely the result of restrictions set on the device through Apple's Screen Time feature. These steps should help resolve the issue:

Option 1: Completely disable Content & Privacy Restrictions

  1. Go to Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions

  2. If toggled on (slider to the right & gree), set Content & Privacy Restrictions at the top to off

Option 2: Leave Content & Privacy Restrictions enabled, but make sure Screen Recording is still enabled

  1. Go to Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions

  2. Tap Content Restrictions

  3. Scroll down to the headline Game Center and check that Screen Recording is set to Allow.
