Invitation Link

The very first step as a participant to a self-test using an iOS device is to receive and email with a link inviting you to take part in a research project. This email will typically explain the research project and provide you with specific tasks that are expected from you as you complete the research.

Setup & Install

Once you have clicked on the link, this is the first screen you will see. This is simply asking you to install the "Participate" app, if you haven't done so already. Otherwise, you will only be prompted to click on "Participate".

Installing the app

If it's your first time with Lookback, you will need to install the app. When clicking on the blue button you will automatically be taken to the Apple Store where you can simply click "download" next to the participate logo (orange hand logo). Note: if you already have the app installed, you won't need to complete this step.

Begin the self-test

Once you have installed and opened the app, you will be prompted to go back to the email you received to click on the self-test link one more time.

Once you click on the study link in the email again, you will be taken to the very first screen of the Participate app. If you wish you can access the terms of use and privacy policy. Then tap the "Accept & Continue" blue button at the bottom of your screen.

Identification screen

Enter your name and email address in the corresponding fields.

Grab some headphones!

This next screen screen simply serves as a tip to make sure this recording session is of the upmost quality possible by suggesting you to use some headphones to decrease background noise.

Enabling microphone, screen and camera

This screen prompts you to activate your microphone, screen and camera. You don't have to but it is strongly encouraged in order to provide all possible insights for the researchers.

Once you have enabled the microphone, screen and camera, you can click on the "Next" blue button at the bottom of your screen.

All set
You are now introduced to the "Participate" bubble that will follow your movements as you complete your self-test. You always have the option to move it if you find that it's in your way! It will also allow you to pause or stop your test pressing on it when you will be done!

As you press the "Start!" green button at the bottom of your screen, you will be directed to the actual test.

Begin the actual Self-Test
You are now automatically taken to the page or app on which you are expected to complete the actual test.

Stop or pause the test

To pause or stop the recording (test) you can tap on the  "Participate" bubble hand and this screen will appear telling you that the recording has been put on "pause". If you wish to go back to your test, you can press the "Resume" green button and you will be directed back to your test recording session. If you wish to  stop completely, you can press the "End" blue button on the bottom the your screen device.

Are you sure you want to end this experience?
On the next screen, you will be provided with three different options:

  1. End completely the test (experience) by pressing the "Yes! Upload it!" blue button.
  2. Press the "Delete this experience" button to start over the entire test
  3. Click on "Go back" at the bottom of your screen device to go back to complete the test (if needed).

You are all done!
Congratulations! You have completed your self-test and the recording is currently uploading! It is important that the "Uploading recording" screen turns into the screen called "Awesome" before you can leave the app and that you do not disconnect from the WiFi during this period until that screen is visible, or else your participation will not be acknowledged and you may not get the incentive from the company.

Once this screen appears, you will know with certainty that your recording has uploaded and you can press the "Done" blue button to close the app.

We hope you enjoyed your experience!
