👋 Hey,

Sometimes you have a participant in-person (at your lab or office) and you want to stream the session for your colleagues to observe and collaborate together in real time.

Android

Our in-person Android app does not currently support live streaming to observers so here's an easy work-around that will allow you to stream using Lookback Live while conducting an in-person interview.

You will need two devices

  1. The Android device that the participant will be using.
  2. A computer being used to moderate a Lookback Live session.

Steps

  1. From your Lookback dashboard, create a project.
  2. Send a Live link to the device the participant will be using (read more about getting your Live Link here!). You can send the link with SMS, chat or email.
  3. Open up the participant link on the device the participant will be using
  4. On a separate machine, view the session and then click "Start moderating"
  5. Once the session has started, immediately mute the microphone on the moderator machine (this way the audio will be recorded only from the device that your participant is using)
  6. Invite your teammates! Send your teammates a link to your project's observer link or to the Live tab of your organization's dashboard. Once a live session begins, your teammates will be able to join and stream live

Great work!

iOS

On iOS in order to run an in-person recording of a website you can use our app Participate.  If you want to record an in-person session of your own app you can embed our SDK into your app.  However if you simply want an in-person recording quickly and easily of anything on your phone then you can use the following technique:

What's needed

  • A Mac with Yosemite or higher OS, QuickTime
  • An iOS device
  • A lightning cable for your iOS device (lightning cable is fancy word for the USB charging cable that comes with all iOS devices)

Steps

  1. Use the lightning cable to connect your Mac to the iOS device
  2. Open QuickTime on the Mac
  3. In Quicktime on the Mac, go to File > New Movie Recording (make sure to click on New Movie Recording, not New Screen Recording)
  4. If you hover over the video of yourself, a small box should appear with a red recording button. Next to the red recording button, you should see a downwards arrow. Click on the downwards arrow
  5. In the dropdown, select your iOS device that is listed. You should now get a full system preview of the iOS device
  6. Now create a project from your dashboard. Select "Desktop" for project type because you are screensharing your Mac (weird right?)
  7. Send a Live link to the Mac
  8. Open up the participant link on the Mac
  9. On a separate machine, view the session and then click "Start moderating"
  10. Once the session has started, immediately mute the microphone on the moderator machine (this way the audio will be recorded only from the device that your participant is using)

Impressive work! Now any of your teammates can stream your session by following the project's observer link or by going to the Live tab of their dashboard and joining from there.

Important notes about this mode:

*Touch previews are not supported through QuickTime
*The camera and microphone of the Mac will be used to capture the participant (the iOS device cam and microphone will not be used)
