Hey [Participant First Name],

Thanks for your willingness to participate in our research study. Please read this email carefully as it contains important information you need to know for this project.

Call Time & Date: [Start time - End time] on [Date]

Researcher: [Name]

Compensation: [Details of Compensation]

As soon as you receive this email:

  • We’re going to be chatting with you using a web conferencing tool which requires Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, or Brave.

  • On your desktop or laptop computer, please download and install one of the supported browsers if you don’t already have it.

Preparing for your session:

  1. Have a headset with a built-in microphone plugged into your desktop or laptop. The microphone will help reduce noise

  2. Disable any notifications and close any other apps that might reveal sensitive information (passwords, personal conversations, etc.). The conferencing tool we’ll use will record everything on your screen

  3. Enable your screen reader’s focus indicator to make it easier for the researcher to follow along as you navigate:

    1. JAWS: JAWS icon in bottom right tray >Utilities>Explore utilities folder - Braille Viewer

    2. NVDA: NVDA Menu >Tools - Speech viewer

    3. Voice Over: Default setting (can be magnified in VoiceOver Utility menu)

  4. Enable your screen reader’s text output feature so the researcher can read your screen reader’s output.

    1. Speech Viewer(NVDA)

    2. Captions Panel (VO)

    3. Braille Viewer (JAWS)

When you're ready to begin:

  1. Close any apps and websites with sensitive info like passwords, banking information, etc.

  2. Open up this link: << LINK >> - make sure you're opening it in Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, or Brave

  3. Enter your name and email address and tap "Next"

NOTE: If you prefer anonymity, instruct Participants to enter their name as P1, 2,... and their email can simply be email@email.com

  4. Connect your headset if you haven’t already, and tap "Next"

  5. Select your microphone and click Next

  6. Select your camera and click Next

  7. Select Display for screen sharing.
NOTE: If you get stuck at this screen it's likely due to privacy settings that need to be updated, due to Apple's release of Catalina. Details here.

  8. The next screen should say: “All set, we're just waiting for the other party to join,” please keep this window open while you wait for me to call you. You may do other things on your computer, but please keep this window open in the background.

  9. At the start time of our interview, a Chrome browser window will appear saying I am calling you. Please click “Answer” so we can begin

  10. During the session, be prepared to talk aloud about what you’re thinking as you complete tasks. The researcher will not be able to hear your screen reader so it’s important that you help him/her follow along more easily.

  11. Once the session is over, you can close your browser.

Please let me know if you have any questions. I look forward to chatting with you!

Thanks,

[Researcher’s First Name]
