Inviting Participants to a Remote, Unmoderated Session

Learn how to invite participants to unmoderated studies (SelfTest and Tasks) in Lookback and how participant links work.

When you’re ready to conduct unmoderated research with Lookback - whether Tasks or SelfTest - the first step is to invite your participants so they can start sessions on their own time.

Lookback uses a single Participant Link for each unmoderated Round. This means you:

  • generate one link per Round, and

  • share that same link with all participants.

Even if multiple participants click the link at the same time, each person will start their own independent session. You do not need separate links for each participant, and you never need to worry about participants ending up in the same session together.

How to invite participants

Follow these steps to invite participants to your unmoderated study:

  1. Create a Tasks or SelfTest Round in your Project.
    If the Round already exists, skip to step 2.

  2. In the project dashboard, find the Round you want to invite participants to.
    Click Invite Participants beside that Round.

  3. Copy the Participant Link presented.
    This is the link you will send to your participants.

  4. Paste and send the Participant Link via email, SMS, or your preferred communication channel.

    You can use Lookback’s email templates as a starting point to craft your invitations.

What participants do with the link

Once participants receive the link:

  • they click it when they are ready to begin their unmoderated session;

  • Lookback opens the study (Tasks or SelfTest) and begins recording their session;

  • each participant’s experience and recordings are captured independently, even though they used the same link.

Best practices for inviting participants

  • Include clear instructions and expectations in your invite message (e.g., that the session is unmoderated, that participants should think aloud, and what device/browser to use).

  • Use the provided email templates to reduce confusion and maximize participation.

  • Make sure participants understand how to open the link on their device (especially on mobile where the Participate app is required for some studies).
