AI Moderation with Eureka

How to use Eureka, Lookback's AI moderator, to get richer responses from unmoderated sessions.

When you're running unmoderated research, you can't probe interesting moments in real time. Eureka fills that gap. It watches each participant's session and, when the moment is right, asks a follow-up question to draw out more detail.

You can even give Eureka guidance on what to focus on — so its questions stay on-topic and aligned with what you're trying to learn.

How to enable AI follow-up

AI moderation is enabled at the task level, so you can turn it on for some tasks and leave it off for others. Here's how:

  1. From your project, click the + button next to Rounds and select Tasks as your round type.

  2. In the left-hand nav, go to Test setup.

  3. Scroll down to the During Session section and find the task you want to configure (or add one with the + button).

  4. Inside the task block, toggle on Enable AI follow up.

  5. Add or edit the guidance in the text box below to help Eureka shape its questions (more on this below).

  6. Repeat for any other tasks where you'd like Eureka to follow up, then click Next.

AI follow-up is available in Tasks rounds only, and only when the round's transcription language is set to English. It's not available for LiveShare, Interview, or SelfTest rounds.

Guiding Eureka

When you enable AI follow-up on a task, you'll see a guidance text box — this is required, but Lookback pre-fills it with a default based on your task type, so you're never starting from scratch. You can use the default as-is or tailor it to your specific research goals.

A few examples of useful guidance:

  • "Make sure we understand why the participant feels the way they do. They can't just say things like 'I like it'."

  • "Follow up to understand the reasoning behind the participant's selections."

  • "If the participant mentions a pain point, ask them to describe a specific time they experienced it."

The more specific your guidance, the more focused Eureka's follow-ups will be.

Things to keep in mind

  • Per-task control. You can enable or disable Eureka independently on each task within a round.

  • Tasks rounds only. Eureka isn't available for LiveShare, Interview, or SelfTest rounds.

  • English only. AI follow-up is only available when the transcription language of the round is set to English.

  • Guidance is required. When you enable Eureka on a task, guidance must be provided — but Lookback fills in a sensible default based on your task type, which you can customise or use as-is.

  • Pricing. Sessions with AI follow-up enabled are counted the same as human-moderated sessions — there's no additional cost.

Frequently asked questions

What do participants see when Eureka follows up?

Participants see the system evaluating their answers and generating additional tasks. It isn't explicitly flagged as AI-driven on their end.

How many times will Eureka follow up?

Eureka will follow up a maximum of two times per task.

Can I control exactly what questions Eureka asks?

Not exactly — Eureka generates questions based on what it observes during the session. But the guidance field gives you meaningful influence over its focus and approach.

Does it work on rounds that are already running?

Yes — changes to AI follow-up settings apply to sessions that start after you save.
